Welcome to the new look of MARCView/ MARConvert News! We hope you like it. All comments and suggestions are welcome.

Character Sets
MARConvert
can convert between any two character encodings. Already available are:
MARC-8, UTF-8, UNIMARC, Latin-1, and LC's MakrBrkr symbols.
This can occur either while converting into or out of MARC, or in a MARC-to-MARC process.
For
MARC-8, all 16,000+ defined symbols can be converted to UTF-8 (or the
other way). When MARC-8 is extended to cover all Unicode, MARConvert
will also.
MARCView can read records in MARC-8, UTF-8, or
Latin-1. However, only symbols that have a Latin-1 equivalent can be displayed. MARCView shows a placeholder symbol when a character
is not in Latin-1.

-
Searching on indicator values.
-
Thanks (and a free site license) to our friends at OCLC for beta testing this release with a file of 1.4 million records!

MARConvert and SQL Server
Three recent MARConvert projects have involved converting between MARC and SQL Server:
-
MARConvert can be used in web applications! Customers of Theodore Front Musical Literature, Inc., can go to a website and select items from their recent orders. The order records in SQL Server are then converted on-the-fly into a downloadable file of MARC records. This enables automated creation of acquisitions records in the customer's ILS.
-
MARConvert is fast! For the King County [Washington] Library System, MARConvert converts and loads MARC bibliographic and order records into SQL Server. One million records are converted and loaded in under 20 minutes! MARC-8 character encodings are preserved.
-
MARConvert is flexible! MARC records are converted into a unique SQL Server data model for another client. The client has the option of loading during the run or bulk-loading after the run. MARC-8 character encodings are converted to UTF-8.
Similar functionality could be developed for Oracle, Access, or other database systems.

Why Can't MARCView Edit?
MARCView makes no changes to your MARC files that it displays. Even when the file is in UTF-8, the display shows the Latin-1 equivalent but the original file is unchanged.
A tool to edit MARC is something quite different and beyond the scope of MARCView. In addition, there are several MARC editors available and we are not sure another is needed.
On the other hand, if you need data modified in a systematic way, this is something that MARConvert can provide. This feature is available even if you do not need the records converted to another format.
