MWeb is a family of products for creating online catalogs of data, images, and media, with searching optimized for complex cultural data. Typical applications are museum and library catalogs, image collections, and art collections.


1. MWeb Enterprise

Our top-end product.

  • High-performance integrated searching of any number and any kind of databases.
  • Uses a highly optimized read-only database for best performance as well as higher security. Includes a loader program so you can update anytime.
  • We customize the interface to your specifications.
  • We can add site-specific displays and functionality.
  • You may use the database for other projects written in any language; we provide Flash source code to get you started.
  • Runs on your Windows server.
  • Continually upgraded to meet your requirements. Over 200 improvements in 2007!


We are developing a Flash interface to MWeb Enterprise, using the free Flex tool from Adobe. The Flex source code is free for MWeb Enterprise sites for them to build Flash online exhibits, Flash content, even an entire Flash MWeb interface. More information and working prototype


The Lower East Side Tenement Museum, in New York, is the newest MWeb Enterprise site. The Museum will be publishing their collections catalog, numerous images and media, as well as a cultural Encyclopedia using MWeb.

2. MWeb Universal


Release 1.2 is in public beta

This beta program is open to anyone. Your input would be highly valued! To participate, please see the MWeb Universal Beta Program page.

Release 1.2 provides web-based searching of multiple MARC21 files in their native format -- no need to convert or export!

Release 1.1 (current release)

  • Supports web access to a single PastPerfect-Online database on your own Windows server.
  • Supports simultaneous searching of multiple PastPerfect databases on the PastPerfect server. Now you can provide integrated access to museums based on region, subject, or theme.


Release 2.0 is in development!

You can try it on our Demonstration Site. Release is planned for early 2009.

  • Integrated searching of multiple databases of different types, on multiple servers anywhere.
  • Searches databases in their existing format -- no need to export or build searchable copies.
  • Databases are searched on their existing servers -- ideal for consortia because it avoids having to send files to a common point.

3. PastPerfect-Online, Powered by MWeb

Online catalogs for PastPerfect databases.

  • Provides searching to all eight record types: Objects, Library, Archives, Photos, Creators, People, Sterms, and Media. Or you may elect to keep any of these private.
  • Includes a simple interface to choose which records and fields you want to publish.
  • You decide what fields should be searched and what they are called on your website.
  • No need to buy or rent a server -- PastPerfect-Online includes hosting provided by PastPerfect Software, Inc.
  • Ready to use, or you can customize the interface with your own logo, messages, and color scheme.

Types of Databases

MWeb Enterprise

For MWeb Enterprise, we develop a loader for your databases and include it in the software. We can load data from most systems and formats, such as PastPerfect, TMS, Mimsy, IO, Argus, Endeavor, SIRSI, Access, SQL Server, Oracle, XML, MARC21, UNIMARC, MARCXML, spreadsheets, and text files. We work with you to plan the best method of loading each data source.

MWeb Universal

MWeb Universal accesses databases three ways:

  1. Using Open Database Connectivity (ODBC), a universal way to access relational databases. This means it can search databases stored in Oracle, SQL Server, Access, Foxpro, etc. And since most museum and library systems use such databases, MWeb Universal can search them.
  2. MWeb Universal can search MARC files in their native form (no exporting or conversion required). Release 1.2 will support any number of MARC21 files of the same format (bibliographic or authority) and in the same encoding (MARC-8 or UTF-8). Later releases will allow mixed formats and encodings, as well as UNIMARC and MARCXML.
  3. An MWeb Universal system can search PastPerfect-Online and MWeb Enterprise databases.
